Job Title: Immersive Content |Client: Churches Conservation Trust

What was involved?...

The Churches ConservationTrust (CCT) is the national charity protecting historic churches at risk. CCT have saved over 340 buildings which attract almost two million visitors a year. Their unique collection of English parish churches includes irreplaceable examples of architecture, archaeology and art from 1,000 years of history.

Keen to increase visitor footfall CCT wanted to reinterpret the way that the churches use their incredible spaces in order to engage with existing and new audiences. We’ve worked on pieces for a number of churches around the UK, including Bristol St John, Holy Trinity church in York and Cambridge church.

Bristol St John

St John on the Wall is a church in Bristol that was built into the original city wall in the 14th century. The crypt underneath the church has had many different uses. We were asked to create an immersive film experience to be projected onto a wall of the crypt, to explain to visitors about events that have happened in and around the church and crypt.

We created an animation that used different layers and a compass mechanism to travel back through time to key moments. As the wall which the film is projected onto is decorated with memorials, we focused on producing rich visuals and used minimal text to tell the story, to ensure the content remained legible. Using sound design in different locations of the crypt, we ensured the experience was immersive to give visitors the real sense that they have travelled back in time.

Holy Trinity, York

Projection to portray an ethereal, immersive experience in the Chantry Chapel to focus on Medieval – chanting, purgatory, ritualistic, scary, priests, damnation, paying to get into heaven.
